A Nation at a Crossroads: Labour Lawmakers Urged to Defend Democracy

Honorable Mr. Peter Gregory Obi’s letter to Distinguished Members of the Labour Party in the National Assembly:

My Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Honorable Members of the Labour Party in the National Assembly,

Since your inauguration as Distinguished Members of the National Assembly, I have deliberately refrained from interfering in your legislative affairs. This decision was made out of respect for your independence and to allow you to focus on your primary duty—alleviating the suffering of the Nigerian people.

However, at this critical juncture—after 26 years of democratic decline marked by the erosion of merit in electoral qualifications, large-scale electoral fraud, and now the unconstitutional removal of duly elected officials—I find it necessary to speak out. These actions not only undermine the rule of law but also have severe implications for our democracy and the people's will.

I urge you to stand as unwavering defenders of justice. Do not support, endorse, or participate in any action that compromises the integrity of our democracy, betrays the trust of the people of Rivers State, or contradicts our shared principles of fairness, equity, and transparency.

We must not be complicit in injustice. At this defining moment, we must place righteousness above convenience and remain resolute in safeguarding the will and welfare of the people of Rivers State.

Let us stand firm, unwavering in our commitment—because a new Nigeria is possible!

Labour Party Lawmakers Called to Action Amidst Democratic Crisis

In a powerful message to Labour Party lawmakers in the National Assembly, Honourable Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 national elections, has issued a clarion call to stand firm against the erosion of Nigeria’s democratic values. His statement warns against the increasing disregard for constitutional principles and electoral integrity, particularly in the wake of the recent unconstitutional removal of elected officials.

Since the inauguration of the current National Assembly, Labour Party members have largely been left to exercise their legislative responsibilities without external interference. However, given the escalating threats to democracy, silence is no longer an option. Obi underscores the severity of the situation, citing twenty-six years of democratic decline marked by compromised electoral standards, large-scale fraud, and blatant disregard for the rule of law.

A Stand for Justice and Integrity

At the heart of Obi’s statement is an impassioned plea for lawmakers to reject any actions that could undermine the interests of the Nigerian people, particularly those in Rivers State, which has recently become a flashpoint for political instability. He challenges Labour lawmakers to remain true to their core values of fairness, equity, and transparency, emphasizing that history will judge those who stand on the wrong side of justice.

“We must not allow ourselves to become instruments of injustice or contribute to the betrayal of the people’s mandate,” Obi declares, urging representatives to place principle above political convenience. His call is not merely to abstain from wrongdoing but to actively resist any decision or vote that threatens the nation’s democratic fabric.

The People’s Mandate Must Be Protected

Obi’s statement comes at a time when many Nigerians are increasingly disillusioned with governance, frustrated by a political system that seems to prioritize power over the people’s will. By directly addressing Labour Party members, he seeks to galvanize them into action, making it clear that their responsibility extends beyond legislative debates—it is a fight for the soul of the nation.

Rivers State, in particular, has been spotlighted as a region where democratic principles are being tested. The unconstitutional removal of elected officials is not merely a localized event but a dangerous precedent that could have far-reaching consequences for governance across the country. If left unchecked, it threatens to dismantle the trust that citizens place in the electoral process, eroding the very foundation of representative democracy.

A New Nigeria Is Possible

Despite the grim realities outlined in his message, Obi strikes an unmistakable tone of hope. He reaffirms his belief that a better Nigeria is within reach—one built on integrity, accountability, and the unwavering commitment of those in power to uphold justice. His call to action is clear: lawmakers must rise above partisan politics and act in the best interest of the nation.

As the country watches closely, the response of Labour Party lawmakers will not only define their legacy but could also shape the future of Nigeria’s democracy. The battle for justice is far from over, and the time to act is now.
